Designer Alexander Lervik is accepting the challenge of providing Nordic Sea Hotel with a brand new look. With 367 hotel rooms at Vasaplan, right in the heart of the city, Nordic Sea Hotel is one of Stockholm’s largest hotels. Total renovation will commence in 2011 and the prototype rooms will be ready by the start of Stockholm Design Week in February 2011.
Following a tough competition between design agencies, Alexander Lervik was commissioned to give the hotel a new look. Nordic Sea Hotel is also Alexander Lervik’s first hotel project.
“With Alexander, we have found a conceptual ideal that will take Nordic Sea Hotel forward and which fits into our portfolio of unique hotels. Alexander’s broad background as a furniture, product and light designer, coupled with his experiences as an interior designer for both shops and restaurants, means that he has an excellent understanding of our business,” says Satu Andersson, CEO of Nordic Sea Hotel and Nordic Light Hotel.
Since its launch, Nordic Sea Hotel has had local support for its interior and concept, taking inspiration from Stockholm and its water. The hotel will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2011 and will face the next decade with a new appearance.
“It is extremely exciting to be able to develop Nordic Sea Hotel’s local concept further. The hotel is not part of a chain, and it is important to retain this personal, individual character. My vision is to design 367 unique rooms, so that no two are the same. Images of Stockholm will form important elements, and the interior of each hotel room will be specially designed. Among other things, I have designed a new chair manufactured by Moroso and light fixtures manufactured by Dark. You could say that after the renovation the hotel will feel a little like a boutique hotel, only on a much larger scale,” comments Alexander.
“One of the greatest challenges was to find a sustainable concept for the smallest rooms in the room, which measure 10 m2 on average and are windowless. It’s a question of creating efficient accommodation and an appealing guest experience at the same time. One element of the solution was photo wallpapers which display 360° vistas of Stockholm’s many fantastic views,” continues Alexander.
Alexander Lervik has distinguished himself within both product design and interior décor, designing everything from furniture, textiles, glass and industrial design, to restaurants, nightclubs and shops. His work can be seen at the National Museum in Stockholm, Röhsska in Gothenburg and at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo.
During Stockholm Design Week, 7-13 February 2011, Alexander will also be acting as a “Light Jockey” for two evenings at Nordic Light Hotel and will be exhibiting his “Light Bar” light installation at Stockholm Furniture Fair, experimenting with the latest innovations in lighting. www.lervik.se
